Barcodes Not Popular Till 1980s

The first barcodes were invented in 1952, but they were not put to commercial use until 1966. The commercial acceptance of barcodes was fairly slow, and in fact an attempt to apply it to the grocery industry in the early 1970s was met with a great deal of scepticism. Barcode technology did not really catch on until the 1980s.
