Barcode Technology Adopted Slowly

The modern day bar code was first developed by Sylvania to identify railroad cars. It was later applied to a toll bridge in New Jersey to let officials quickly scan for cars that had paid for a monthly pass. Then the U.S. Post Office wanted a similar system to keep track of which trucks had entered the yard and when. Other similar applications eventually led to the grocery industry's interest and the eventual application of barcode technology to inventory control across virtually all business types.
