Could your job be the source of your upper arm fat?

The surprising response is that yes, your work could be causing some degree of upper arm fat accumulation. After all, some convincing research has showed a conclusive link between workplace conditions and BMI.

How do we know? Because of the Whitehall studies conducted in Britain. You see, everyone in Britain has access to the same healthcare. So these studies showed that it was work conditions that led to changes in exercise, diet and weight gain.

So here is what to look out for at your job:

1. Lack of control. Not being in control is a primary cause of work related stress. And the stress causes your body to secrete hormones which lead to more arm fat accumulation.

2. Excess tenseness. If you feel like you are in a constant state of tension, stress hormones are going to flood your body. And said hormones can alter levels of arm fat. One simple test is to assess how stiff your neck muscles are.

3. Undefined expectations. Poorly defined work expectations or project expectations can lead to huge amounts of stress. Ask your superiors for more clearly defined goals and tell them that the increased clarity will allow you to get more work done for the company.

4. Your rank. The research from the UK showed that lower ranking jobs lead to more weight gain. So if you are stuck in a lower ranking position, seek out other activities in which you can be more dominant. Perhaps you have a latent talent or hobby you have forgotten about.

5. Identity crisis. If your job is your identity, you run the risk of emotional roller coasters. Again, seek out activities outside of work so that you don’t fall into this trap. This is one of the main reasons why so many successful businessmen commit suicide once their operations flop.

I would like to point out that there is only so much you can do. If you find that your workplace is simply not healthy, then please start taking the necessary steps for a transition. You deserve good health today, not tomorrow. And you just might find that the upper arm fat melts like butter!
